6 Common Traits of Lightworkers

What is a Lightworker?

A Lightworker is an awakened soul who has chosen to incarnate on this earthly plane to bring healing to others. They devote their lifetimes to raising the collective consciousness of the world by transmuting vibrations of darkness (fear and ego) into lightness (truth and love).

Life is a spectrum of energy between two contrasting ends: light and dark. Lightness is higher-vibrational, limitless, self-sufficient, steady, and oriented towards intimacy and love. Light is connected to Source and the belief that we are all one. Darkness, on the other hand, is lower-vibrational and dense. Because darkness is disconnected from Source, it sees separateness, competition and survival in almost everything. Unable to sustain itself, it seeks to take energy from others in the only way it knows how — negativity.

Lightworkers are positive, greatly conscious people driven to make this world a better place. In a world that is largely unconscious, Lightworkers serve as beacons to humanity shedding light on the truth that we are all spiritual beings having a human experience. They take the painful, weighted aspects of the human experience and neutralize them with kindness and compassion. It’s an incredibly intense and passionate calling. If you’re a Lightworker, you know exactly what I’m talking about. Nevertheless, no matter how much negativity comes your way, you know what your mission is and you maintain your path with quiet confidence. You’re not better than any other person, you’re simply a volunteer to enact great change in the world. No one—and I mean no one—can steal your shine.

Finding out you’re a Lightworker is an incredibly freeing experience. So many of us don’t realize we’re Lightworkers until we begin searching for the reasons why we feel we don’t belong here. Knowing you’re not alone and that there are others like you can give you the extra momentum you need to keep going. Below are 6 of the most common traits I’ve found in the Lightworking community, please feel free to share yours in the comments below!

1. Your life is a continual story of personal growth and awareness, death and rebirth, and a deeper understanding of self and others. You have an innate calling to help others towards the highest vibrations of awakening in the transition from ego to soul.

You’re unafraid to go deep and you’re incredibly comfortable with the dusty, dark corners of the human experience. You’re able to face what others usually run away from or ignore completely: the shadow self.

You see death and the unknown, no matter how painful or uncomfortable, as necessary stages of life in the journey towards enlightenment. Having no fear of death, you’re fully free to explore the most enlightened, integrated soul experience possible. You see life as a series of opportunities to practice non-attachment and the art of letting go. You understand the symbiotic relationships between life and death — that one cannot exist without the other. Because of this you embrace change and adversity as you possess a deep knowing that everything will work out for the greater good.

Oriented towards mindful awareness of self and others, you desire to go through all parts of life with the people around you from the highest highs to the lowest lows. You have a deep love for all (even those you don’t particularly like on a personal level) as your heart is always to help and ease suffering.

2. A natural born Empath, you’re keenly aware of the inner workings of others and intuitively know what type of healing they can benefit from.

Empaths (aka Clairsentients) can intuitively feel and absorb the emotions (and sometimes physical states) of others. Lightworkers pick up on these same vibrations but have a clear knowing of how to help a person heal and overcome. It could be in the form of a well-timed hug, a gift of thoughtfulness, a word of encouragement, or sincere presence in a time of need. By countering negativity with positivity and elevating others in love, we are working to dissipate the negative collective consciousness.

Unfortunately, a challenge many Lightworkers struggle with is accepting that not all people want to be free of their weighted existence. This can be a difficult truth to accept but the sooner you accept it, the sooner you’ll be able to move on and affect the most change where it’s meant most.

3. You have been through your own traumas which serve to remind you of the importance of healing energy.

In my experience I’ve found that a lot of Lightworkers are born into broken families. It almost seems like a rite of passage. These broken family dynamics which you chose to be born into are catalysts for your soul’s development. They are tools for you to realize everything you are not and, therefore, everything you are meant to be. Having been through the worst with those who should have cared for you best, you’re well-primed to help others heal from truly heavy, unjust experiences.

Attracting lower vibrational people is part of the territory of being a Lightworker due to the light you shine out so freely. While it’s your calling to help, it’s important to make sure that you do as much of your own healing before trying to help others. Otherwise you can easily lose yourself in the strong pull of another’s negative orbit. You’ll also have a much more powerful impact the more whole (the more aligned with Source) you are. But remember that there’s no such thing as perfection so please don’t let your imperfections stop you from doing your work. You don’t have to be perfect to carry out your calling; you just have to be willing to gut-check yourself on a regular basis and remain cognizant that you are also on your own journey of growth. As within, so without.

4. Although your heart is to serve others and you connect with people easily, because of your sensitivity to energy you are selective with your inner circle.

Lightworkers come here with a memory of the amazing wholeness of the Other Side where unity, peace, truth and love are the cornerstones. Coming here is much like being plucked out of paradise and dropped into a prison cell — it’s negative, stifling and hostile compared to what’s beyond the veil. Adding to that the fact that you’re a magnet for needy, hurting people and it can make for an overwhelming existence at times.

One of the ways Lightworkers cope with this drastic shift of existence is by being selective with close relationships — something I didn’t learn the priceless value of until much later in life. For many years I gave a lot of my prana (life force) away to most anyone who came into my life. I figured if they were “friendly enough”, then it was acceptable to form a connection with them. I would even form close relationships with people who I knew had no sincere interest in knowing and valuing me beyond what I could do for them (aka “energy vampires”). Eventually I reached a breaking point where I had no energy to give to anyone or anything, myself included.

This was a quantum moment in my life. I took a good hard look at the people I was regularly giving so much to and I realized that I was smack-dab in the middle of several unconscious, energy-draining relationships. I learned that not everyone deserves a seat at your table and who you surround yourself with is eventually who you’ll become. Why? Because energy is contagious! So I purged my life of close relationships that were unsupportive of my journey and invested in genuine relationships with real intimacy and loving synergy. To date, this is one of the best things I’ve ever done for myself. It restored my soul and put me in a better position to help those who I’m truly meant to help.

5. You are strongly connected to nature and the healing vibrations it offers. Conversely, you are averse to any energies that are too busy or loud.

Lightworkers have a strong affinity for the solace nature offers. It’s the closest energy we have to Source here on Earth. Nature restores balance to our vibrations and provides the stillness necessary to leave one’s mind and go deep into “being” where peace resides. On the contrary, Lightworkers have a strong aversion to loud, busy energy. There’s a reason why people who live in rural areas are known for being easy-going and less-stressed and why cities have the highest rate per capita of mental illness. Cities are a place of busyness and loudness where there’s literally not enough space for everyone’s energy and peace of mind.

Busyness is the antithesis of stillness which the soul needs in order to overcome the ego and thrive. Without stillness, high-mental energy abounds. It’s important to slow the mind down, to be still, and nature provides the perfect setting for that. Here’s a link to an interview with someone who has mastered stillness of the mind — can you feel the peace, calmness and ease his being radiates?

6. You have always gone against the grain, unafraid of being non-conforming.

As a child you may have had a difficult time connecting with peers due to being an old soul and seeing the “big picture.” This lone wolf existence is why you’re inherently comfortable being alone. You don’t need a large number of people in your circle to feel supported. In fact, your circle is likely very small. You are all about togetherness but when the greater good calls for you to stand apart with your light, you have no issue doing so. You know what you’re here to do and anything that stands in the way is graciously avoided.

Lightworkers are very often seen as “black sheep” for not following along especially when it’s expected. Rules, organizations, governments, religions or any power hierarchy where people are exploited for the egotistical gain of another rubs you in all the wrong ways. This is because your soul-memory recalls the soaring freedom you had on the other side where everyone looked out for one another (how amazing it felt to be safe and yet unrestricted!). Rules are ultimately fear-driven and don’t align with what Source is about. Your strong adherence to your convictions and fearlessness in speaking out against controlling hierarchy is not always well-received, but you do so anyway because your soul can’t bear the alternative which is to say nothing and play along. Speaking your truth is a must.

Lightworkers aren’t just spiritualists, healers, and psychics…

We are in just about every profession from nurses, artists, and CEO’s to athletes, therapists and janitors. At the core of every Lightworker is a deep desire to make a difference by embodying our authentic truth and being of service to others. If this is you, then you’re a Lightworker! I encourage you to join a community of like-minded people who will support you in your journey. There’s nothing more fulfilling than living out your purpose and helping others along the way!
